For the past several months, the Clinic has worked with AIDS-Free World (www.aidsfreeworld.org) to explore victim-witness protection efforts in international criminal cases that involve crimes of sexual or gender-based violence. AIDS Free-World is an international advocacy organization that has extensively documented politically motivated rape in Zimbabwe.
Two clinic students, Leila and Mary, along with an attorney from AIDS-Free World, Shonali, will travel to Liberia to conduct interviews with government officials and NGO workers involved in victim-witness protection in the arena of international sexual crimes and gender-based violence. This is also part of a larger project of evaluating how justice systems work in a country like Liberia.
We will share with you what we are learning about the justice system in Liberia, efforts to protect victims of sexual violence, and accountability for such crimes in Liberia. Thank you for sharing this experience with us! We are honored to play a role in victim-witness protection and the fight against international crimes of gender-based violence.
